Films worth talking about.

A monthly film night for Richardson: one great film, then a real conversation about what it says about our city.

The lights come up and nobody reaches for their keys. That is the whole idea. Book club rules, with a bigger screen and one question at the center: what does this film say about us, and about the kind of city we want to be?

The founding story

"The cinema chair."

Richardson has a seat at the arts table for visual art, and another for music. Film is ours to fill.

This club began in a theater seat. Somewhere in the dark, between the trailers and the credits, a thought that would not leave: Richardson celebrates visual art at the Cottonwood Art Festival and music at the Wildflower Arts and Music Festival, and both feel like the city at its best. The third chair at the arts table, the cinema chair, sits empty. It has been empty for years. Nobody owns it. It just needed somebody to pull it up.

So that is what we are doing. We are not a theater and not a nonprofit, not yet anything with a board or a budget. We are neighbors who love movies and love this city, and we think the best part of a great film is the conversation in the parking lot afterward. We are building a club around that conversation.

Every film is chosen through one lens: what does this film say about us, and about the kind of city we want to be?

The Richardson Lens

How a night works

Watch, then talk. That is the shape of it.

One weeknight a month, we do two things well. We watch a film worth the drive. Then we stay and talk about it, because the talking is half the point.

FRAME 01

We gather

A screen, some popcorn, and a room of neighbors. Come whether you know every director or just love a good story. No dues, no committees, no homework.

FRAME 02

We watch

One film, chosen with care through the Richardson Lens. A classic, a hometown shoot, a quiet favorite: always something with our city somewhere inside it.

FRAME 03

We talk

The credits roll and nobody leaves. Thirty minutes, three questions at most, one at the center. We let it breathe, argue pleasantly, and go home having met the city a little more.

The ambition

The aim is a rhythm the city can count on: a First Friday of the month that belongs to film, the same way Cottonwood and Wildflower belong to their weekends. We start small and sustainable, one good night at a time, and let the habit build.

The pilot

A founding season, when the right room is ready.

Every good club starts with a first night and a small circle of people willing to try it. Our founding season begins with a group of Richardson neighbors, and grows the way the best things do: one person telling another.

  • Small on purpose. A founding circle of neighbors for the first nights, so the room stays warm and the conversation stays real.
  • Growing outward. If the first nights land, we open the doors wider, season by season, toward a steady club of regulars.
  • Honest about the stage. No membership tiers, no board, no ticket booth. Just a founding list and the intention to build this right.

Richardson Film Society · Founding list

Consider this your ticket.

Right now, the whole society fits inside an email list, and that is by design. There is no app, no dues, no login. Put your name and email below, and you are a founding member. You will be the first to hear about Night One.

If you want to help shape what this becomes, as a volunteer, a sponsor, or a founding board member, join the list. We will reach out personally.

How would you like to be involved?

Check anything that sounds like you. No commitment, and you can change your mind any time.

Your email goes to the founding list and nowhere else. No dues, no spam.

Why a list and not a launch? Because a founding list is the entire infrastructure a young film society needs. It is how we invite you, how we grow by word of mouth, and how a good movie night becomes a habit the city keeps. Everything else, we build together.
